Notes from Kai: Blame it on my amygdala!

Woof woof, Mom! Your furry pal, Kai, is here to spill the beans in the most dog-tastic way possible. Are you ready for some doggie wisdom with a side of hilarious antics? Let's dig in!

First things first, did you know that we big boys like me only get around 12 years of fun and frolic with you? Time flies when you're wagging your tail, so I need you to be my trusty sidekick throughout this journey. Your love and understanding mean the world to me!

Now, I may be 11, but I'm practically a senior citizen in human years. Can you believe it? Although my brain is as bright as a doggy genius, it's still comparable to that of a mischievous 2-year-old human. So, Mom, please cut me some slack when I do silly things. I'll never be as brainy as you, but that makes me irresistibly lovable!

Sure, I aced my agility test when I was younger and learned many life skills thanks to your fantastic teaching. But hey, sometimes my doggie instincts take over, and I can't resist looking for that bone during our walks and suddenly I can’t hear a thing you say. It's like a magnetic force pulling me in the bushes! And those squirrels? Oh, they drive me absolutely nuts with their chattering and speedy moves. They just don't know how to keep it down! I know it's a bit primal, but I can't help myself. Maybe they're just scared of my awesomeness! Thanks for letting me chase them for a bit and then I have to do something else with you. I appreciate you allowing me to savor my instinctual need even, if it is short-lived.

You've never called me "stubborn," and I'm forever grateful. Some pups out there get that label, and honestly, it sounds like a bummer. But you understand that I have my own unique way of thinking. Blame it on my big amygdala and tiny prefrontal cortex—my emotions run wild! I can see it on your face when you wonder, "What were you thinking, Kai?" Well, truth be told, my amygdala does most of the thinking. I wish I could be cool as a cucumber, but Mother Nature has plans for me!

So, here's how you can help me navigate this doggy brain of mine. Teach me the skills I need to be a good pup in your world but remember, I still have my canine needs. Show some empathy when I seem a bit clueless. My brain has a mind of its own, you know! And let's remember to give me a choice to be me. You speak, I bark, and we find a way to communicate. I need some freedom now and then but don't worry, Mom—I give it all up to be your faithful companion.

Oh, and sometimes I need a little breathing room from your loving hugs and other people and dogs. It's not personal, Mom, I promise. It's just my doggy way of saying, "Hey, I need space to be my fabulous self!" And when it comes to communication, I may not have words, but my whole body speaks volumes. Learn to read my gestures, from wiggles to wags, and you'll understand my doggie language in no time.

Last but not least, keep me safe, Mom. I know I can get us into some wacky situations without even trying. But rest assured, I trust you'll be there to save the day, no anger involved. Your love and protection mean everything to me!

So, dear Mom, please understand and stand by me, your one-of-a-kind pup. Together, we'll conquer the world with belly rubs, goofy grins, and endless adventures. Woof out!
